Underground power cable failure hits Q2, causes evacuation

BILLINGS - A spokesman for Northwestern Energy said an underground power cable failure caused a major power outage at the Q2 studios Wednesday.

Power crews were at the scene Wednesday afternoon to restore power to the building. No other outages were reported in the area.

The outage was expected to last two to three hours.

Regular news programming is expected to continue without interruption.

BILLINGS - Emergency crews were called to the Q2 studio in Billings on Wednesday morning following an explosion and smoke in the building.

Employees evacuated the building the building at 3203 3rd Ave. N. when power was lost to some areas and smoke began to fill the second floor.

Reports indicate that a transformer that feeds the building failed, which caused the explosion that disrupted power at about 11 a.m. As a result, a fan motor in the boiler room then failed and sent smoke to the second and third floor.

There was no fire reported, and no injuries.

Billings fire crews cleared the building and Q2 employees were allowed to return inside shortly before noon.
